Flexible, temperature resistant and easy to handle
In addition to dimensionally-stable hard felts, insulation materials made of carbon fibers also include high-performance soft felts. The great flexibility of the temperature-resistant fiber composite material enables individual adjustment to the respective industrial application. Soft felt is manufactured in a multi-stage heat treatment process.
In the first process stage, the basic material – the so-called raw felt consisting of needled cellulose fibers – is carburized at 800-1000°C to form carbon soft felt. The so-called graphitizing takes place at temperature above 2000°C and converts the carbon fibers into a graphite-like structure.
Soft felts can be processed individually using conventional cutting tools.
